US Attorney's Suspicious Deaths

More murdered US Attorneys?

and in Texas: Michael Bradford, Wes Rivers, Thelma Colbert, Shannon Ross

  • On September 9, 2003, the former U.S. Attorney for Eastern Texas, Michael Bradford, who served for seven years until April 2001, was found dead near his car in a wooded area in Hardin County, Texas. Bradford was 51 and was appointed U.S. Attorney on the advice of Texas' longtime congressman Jack Brooks, a longtime and no-nonsense investigator of administration scandals, Republican and Democrat. As U.S. Attorney, Bradford successfully sued several large oil companies to recover $400 million in royalty payments due the federal government. Bradford suffered a gunshot wound to his head and police found a shotgun near his body. Police ruled the death a suicide.

Bradford's replacement, Wes Rivers, served as U.S. Attorney for East Texas for seven months until being downgraded to Assistant U.S. Attorney in Tyler, Texas. Rivers prosecuted several drug cartel leaders. Last month, Rivers tied suddenly of a brain aneurysm while vacationing with his family on the Bolivar Peninsula, near Galveston. Rivers was 56.

During the evening of October 11, 2001, Tom Wales, 49, the Assistant U.S. Attorney for Washington state, was shot through a window in his basement. The assailant fired the shots from Wales' back yard. Wales later died in the hospital. The FBI investigation, code named "SEPROM" [Seattle Prosecutor Murder], remains unsolved. John McKay, the US Attorney for Western Washington, who pressured both the Justice Department and FBI to more vigorously investigate Wales' murder, was, like Maryland U.S. Attorney Tom DiBiagio, fired by U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales for asking too many questions and not being seen as "loyal Bushies."

In 2004, two female federal prosecutors in Texas who were prosecuting cases involving Medicare fraud by Novation LLC and other medical care providers were found dead from suspicious causes. Federal prosecutor in Fort Worth, Thelma Colbert, was found dead in her swimming pool on July 20, 2004, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Shannon Ross was found dead in her home on September 13, 2004. The Tarrant County medical examiner ruled Colbert's death an accident. The Dallas County medical examiner determined Ross' death was from "natural causes."

Dobson manipulation of gay parents data?
DENVER — Members of a group supporting parental rights for gays and lesbians accused Focus on the Family founder James Dobson of manipulating research data to say gays and lesbians are not good parents, and began a 65-mile march Monday to confront him at his Colorado Springs headquarters.

A Focus on the Family official denied the allegation.

Soulforce Executive Director Jeff Lutes said Dobson's statements have brought rejection and ridicule on gay and lesbian parents, and the group wants him to stop.  "That misinformation has real tragic results. It makes living for families like ours much more difficult. We are rejected sometimes by loved ones, we are shunned by churches and we are discriminated against in every state in this country," Lutes said at a rally before the march.

Judith Stacey, a sociologist at New York University, said her work was manipulated in an attempt to show gays and lesbians do not make good parents. Click here to read Stacey's report.   "This is a direct misrepresentation of the research," she said.

Focus on the Family spokesman Glenn Stanton cited other research — including an article co-authored by Mary Parke, a policy analyst at the Center for Law and Social Policy, that shows that children need a mother and a father, regardless of the parents' sexual orientation. Click here to read Parke's article.

"We haven't said anything about sexual orientation," he said.   Another spokesman, Gary Schneeberger, said Focus on the Family declined to meet privately with members of Virginia-based Soulforce last year but offered to hold a public debate, which Soulforce refused.   "This is a public issue. We should have a public debate," he said.

(DENVER, CO) -- Wearing orange t-shirts that glowed brightly in the hazy mountain sun, nine Soulforce families gathered today to kick off the 1000 Watt March, Vigil and Concert, confronting the anti-gay misinformation of political power broker James Dobson and his multi-million dollar organization, Focus on the Family.  Joining the families for a press conference to kickoff the 65-mile relay march from Denver to the headquarters of Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs was Dr. Judith Stacey, a professor of sociology from New York University. Stacey’s research on the children of same-sex parents has been misquoted by Focus on the Family to justify discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and their families.  Stacey reiterated for the assembled families and news media the basic conclusion of her research: "The sexual orientation or gender combination of the parents raising children does not have much impact on children's development; the quality of the parents' relationship and the quality of their parenting does." Stacey concluded that although there can be slight variations, even advantages, to the development of children of same-sex parents, these were "differences, not deficiencies."
