modestly over the past half decade, now has to figure out what
to do about something they can’t exactly control: reports that
everyone’s favorite mass murderer, Adolph Hitler, had a little
hobby drawing Disney characters during World War II. That’s
the claim by a Norwegian war museum after its director, William
Hakvaag, found drawings of Bashful and Doc from 1937’s Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs, a copy of which Hitler owned, as
well as one of Pinocchio, from the 1940 film, hidden in a
painting Hakvaag bought at auction. Hitler fancied himself an
artist, and even tried to make a living from it, before setting
his sights on taking of the world and eradicating it of any

Lawrence Britt has examined the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany),
Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia) and several Latin
American regimes. Britt found 14 defining characteristics common to each:
1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - Fascist regimes tend to make
constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other
paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing
and in public displays. 2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights -
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in
fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain
cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way
or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long
incarcerations of prisoners, etc. 3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats
as a Unifying Cause - The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic
frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial
, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists,
terrorists, etc. 4. Supremacy of the Military - Even when there are
widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate
amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected.
Soldiers and military service are glamorized. 5. Rampant Sexism - The
governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively
male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made
more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homosexuality are suppressed and the
state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - Sometimes to media is directly controlled by
the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by
government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives.
Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. 7. Obsession with
National Security - Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government
over the masses. 8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - Governments
in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a
tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is
common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion
are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions. 9.
Corporate Power is Protected - The industrial and business aristocracy of
a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into
power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and
power elite. 10. Labor Power is Suppressed - Because the organizing power
of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are
either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed. 11. Disdain for
Intellectuals and the Arts - Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate
open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for
professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free
expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked. 12. Obsession with
Crime and Punishment - Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost
limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook
police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism.
There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in
fascist nations. 13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - Fascist regimes
almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint
each other to government positions and use governmental power and
authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon
in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be
appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders. 14. Fraudulent
Elections - Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham.
Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even
assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control
voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the
media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate

News: Prosecutors Ask for 7-Year Term for Ex-Qwest CEO
for Completing $52M in Illegal Stock Sales DENVER (AP) --
Prosecutors recommended Friday that former Qwest chief executive
Joe Nacchio serve a maximum of seven years and three months in
prison for completing $52 million in illegal stock sales when his
telecommunications company was at financial risk. In a brief filed
late Friday, government attorneys also recommended Nacchio serve
three years probation and be fined a maximum of $19 million.
"Any less severe sentence would fail to provide just
punishment, to promote respect for the law, and to protect the
public," prosecutor James Hearty wrote on behalf of the legal
team. In a separate brief, defense attorney Herbert Stern asked
U.S. District Judge Edward Nottingham to impose an unspecified
lesser sentence which he said was warranted because of the effect
a lengthy prison term would have on the health of two of Nacchio's
family members. Stern said the situation was explained in detail
in a sealed report from the U.S. Department of Probation that was
submitted to the judge. Nacchio also could be required to forfeit
millions under a civil forfeiture action filed after he was
convicted. Prosecutors want Nottingham to require the one-time CEO
give back $52 million of "ill-gotten gains" while
defense attorneys argue it should be no more than $1.8 million.
Nacchio, who resigned from Qwest Communications International Inc.
under pressure in June 2002, is scheduled to be sentenced July 27
in U.S. District Court. He was charged with 42 counts of insider
trading for $101 million worth of transactions between January and
May 2001. The jury acquitted him on 23 counts, but concluded that
his criminal action began after an April 2001 conference call when
he failed to inform investors of the problems the company faced.
Jurors convicted him on 19 counts for transactions during April
and May of 2001. Nacchio remains free on bail pending the
sentencing, and has said he will appeal the conviction. Each
insider trading count carries a penalty of up to 10 years in
prison and a maximum $1 million fine but is adjusted under federal
sentencing guidelines that take into account Nacchio's actions
which either made the situation worse or better. Separately,
Nacchio and several other one-time Qwest executives are still
involved in a pending civil fraud lawsuit that accuses them of
orchestrating a financial fraud that forced the Qwest to restate
$2.2 billion in revenue. |

like an oblique way in which to approach Mel Gibson's ghastly movie The
Passion. But it came back to me this week that an associate of his had once
told me, in lacerating detail, that an evening with Mel was one long fiesta
of boring but graphic jokes about anal sex. I've since had that confirmed by
other sources. And, long before he emerged as the spear-carrier for the sort
of Catholicism once preached by Gen. Franco and the persecutors of Dreyfus,
Mel Gibson attained a brief notoriety for his loud and crude attacks on
gays. Now he's become the proud producer of a movie that relies for its
effect almost entirely on sadomasochistic male narcissism. The culture of
blackshirt and brownshirt pseudomasculinity, as has often been pointed out,
depended on some keen shared interests. Among them were massively repressed
homoerotic fantasies, a camp interest in military uniforms, an obsession
with flogging and a hatred of silky and effeminate Jews. Well, I mean to
say, have you seen Mel's movie?
I think that it's a healthy sign for our society that so many Jews have
decided to be calm and unoffended by the film, and that so many Christians
say they don't feel any worse about Jews after having seen it. We have a
social consensus where Jews feel more secure and Christians less insecure.
Good. But this does not alter the fact that The Passion is anti-Semitic in
intention and its director anti-Semitic by nature. Some people including
myself think that Abe Foxman and the Anti-Defamation League are too easily
prone to charge the sin of anti-Semitism. But if someone denies the
Holocaust one day and makes a film accusing Jews of Christ-killing the next
day, I have to say that if he's not anti-Jewish then he's certainly getting
there.

Nacchio indictment

Rocky
Mountain News: Court documents filed this week name more than 15
former Qwest executives and directors who may be critical to the
government's criminal case against former CEO Joe Nacchio. Some - such as
former Chief Operating Officer Afshin Mohebbi and former Chief Financial
Officer Robin Szeliga - already were assumed to be key prosecution
witnesses.
Others could be potential witnesses or individuals who possess
information prosecutors believe is important to the case.
The list includes former Qwest Chief Financial Officer Robert Woodruff,
who faces civil fraud charges, and former Chief Legal Counsel Drake
Tempest, who regularly commuted with Nacchio between Denver and their East
Coast homes.
The names, described as the Justice Department's "embargoed
list," were disclosed in federal court filings by defense attorneys
whose clients face civil fraud charges by the Securities and Exchange
Commission. Attorneys representing two former Qwest midlevel accountants
are trying to get permission to take some depositions and move forward
with their cases.
The "embargoed list" names individuals federal prosecutors
don't want defense attorneys to take depositions from until the Nacchio
criminal case is resolved.
That doesn't mean everyone on the list would take the stand against
Nacchio in an insider-trading trial set to start March 19. Nor does it
indicate all the individuals on the list who already have cooperated with
the government.
But it does indicate the individuals are important enough to the
Nacchio case that the prosecution doesn't want them giving statements
under oath in the civil fraud case in the meantime.
The list consists of people who were in a position to know how Qwest
generated its revenues, how it booked its deals and how it decided to
reflect its financial results to investors and analysts. The list, for
example, includes investor relations director Lee Wolfe, whose counterpart
at Enron was a witness in the criminal trial of Ken Lay and Jeffrey
Skilling.
Tom Stephens and Peter Hellman, who were on the Qwest board's audit
committee at the time, also are on the list. Hellman, still a Qwest
director, testified in front of Congress in late 2002 about Qwest.
The Justice Department list also includes several individuals who
already have settled civil fraud cases with the SEC: Greg Casey, Qwest's
former top sales executive, and former finance executives -William Eveleth
and Roger Hoaglund.
Jeff Dorschner, spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Colorado,
declined to comment Friday.
The government has charged Nacchio with 42 counts of insider trading in
connection with the sale of more than $100 million of Qwest stock during
the first five months of 2001.

Prosecutors maintain Nacchio accelerated his sales while knowing Qwest's
financial condition was deteriorating.
Nacchio has pleaded not guilty.
