  • Wikipedia:  North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) is a water mass that forms in the North Atlantic Ocean. It is largely formed in the Labrador Sea and in the Greenland Sea by the sinking of highly saline, dense overflow water from the Greenland Sea. The watermass can be traced around the southern end of Greenland and then, at a depth of 2000-4000 meters, down the coast of Canada and the United States where it turns a bit east. It continues southeast, past the eastern tip of South America and across the South Atlantic. Its path can ultimately be traced into the Southern Ocean and around the tip of Africa as it mixes with Circumpolar Deep Water. In the "conveyor belt" model of the thermohaline circulation of the world ocean, the sinking of NADW pulls the waters of the North Atlantic drift northward; however, this is almost certainly an oversimplification of the actual relationship between NADW formation and the strength of the Gulf Stream/N. Atlantic drift [1]. NADW's distinctive composition (particularly high-salinity) compared to other water masses allows its path to be traced as it mixes with Circumpolar Deep Water, which in turn fills the deep Indian Ocean and part of the South Pacific. It is believed that North Atlantic Deep Water formation has been dramatically reduced at times during the past (such as during the Younger Dryas or during Heinrich events), and that this might correlate with a decrease in the strength of the Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic drift, in turn cooling the climate of northwestern Europe. There is concern that global warming might cause this to happen again. It is also hypothesized that during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), NADW was replaced with an analogous watermass that occupied a shallower depth known as Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water (GNAIW).

  • Wikipedia "Green politics or Green ideology is a political ideology which places a high importance on ecological and environmentalist goals, and on achieving these goals through broad-based, grassroots, participatory democracy and a consensus decision-making. Green politics is advocated by supporters of the Green movement, which has been active through Green parties in many nations since the late 1970s and early 1980s. The political term Green, a translation of the German Grün, was coined by die Grünen, the first successful Green party, in the 1970s. ... "Greens" claim that their ideology represents a fundamentally new way of addressing societal and political problems, and that green politics is therefore not classifiable along the traditional left-right political spectrum. While green parties are often characterized as left-wing parties, this is not always the case. In fact, different currents within green politics can be described as variously left-wing or right-wing. In addition to ecological issues, green politics is concerned with issues of social justice, civil rights, and nonviolence." notes: concepts, ecology, social justice, grassroots democracy, four pillars expanded to its 'Ten Key Values', Decentralization from national to local level, community-based economics, meaningful work with dignity, feminism, respect for diversity, personal and global responsibility, sustainability, future focus.  Global Greens, an international movement, charter, six guiding principles: see above plus participatory democracy,

  • AltEnergy Stocks  Ponds or Reactors? There are two basic approaches to growing algae: open pond and closed reactor. The open pond method, which is what Petrosun Drilling (OTC:PSUD) recently announced they are pursuing, involves growing the algae in open ponds of water, much like it grows in nature. Open ponds are clearly quite cheap, but they require a reliable supply of water to replenish that lost from evaporation (making them impractical in all but the wettest parts of the country (Petrosun's first farm will be on the Texas coast, and use saltwater, which helps with this problem.) The lack of temperature and weather control can further decrease yields from the theoretical potential.   ...   The other problem with open ponds is that it is impossible to keep other types of algae (a.k.a. weeds) out, meaning that high percentages of oil in the final crop will be impossible to attain. This means that biofuel produced from pond algae will require much more extensive processing to be turned into fuel. It's easy to grow pond scum, but turning it into something useful is harder.    ...    The other option is the algae bioreactor, one type of which (from Solix biofuels) was referenced in the chart above. The Solix technology uses closed plastic bags agitated by rollers, has climate control with the use of controlled radiative cooling, and uses concentrated carbon dioxide emissions to enhance algal growth. (The best description of the technology is at Algae @ Work, a company which was started by Solix's former CTO seeking to apply the technology to carbon capture.)   ...   To me the bioreactor approach (Solix's technology is only one version) seems most likely to achieve the promise of extremely high yields, and even that is not without problems. Large scale bioreactors are complex systems. As such, they will be expensive and take great efforts to move from the lab to commercial scale.
  • Origin Oil, Inc. is developing a breakthrough technology that will transform algae, the most promising source of renewable oil, into a true competitor to petroleum. Much of the world's oil and gas is made up of ancient algae deposits. Today, our technology will produce "new oil" from algae, through a cost-effective, high-speed manufacturing process. This endless supply of new oil can be used for many products such as diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, plastics and solvents without the global warming effects of petroleum. Other oil producing feedstock such as corn and sugarcane often destroy vital farmlands and rainforests, disrupt global food supplies and create new environmental problems. Our unique technology, based on algae, is targeted at fundamentally changing our source of oil without disrupting the environment or food supplies. To learn more about OriginOil, please visit our website at Origin Oilmore
  • PetroAlgae  Micro-crops include macro-algae, micro-algae, diatoms, micro-angiosperms, cyanobacters and other small fuel- or food-producing organisms of extremely rapid growth. They are exciting because they are much more productive than macro-crops (soy, corn, etc.) since they can be harvested daily or even more frequently. Micro-crops thus are resource-efficient, making maximum use of land, water and energy. Because of this high productivity and land-use efficiency, they do not require widespread deforestation to provide large volumes of product (unlike, for example palm and jatropha). Since micro-crops typically only require water, nutrients, carbon dioxide and sunlight, arable land is not necessary for successful growth.
  • CNN Sapphire is one of the most promising companies in its class. Founder and CEO Jason Pyle, 38, is a molecular biologist on his third startup (he also founded two medical technology companies in San Francisco). Pyle and his team started off in 2007 with about 40 strains of oil-producing algae and have since genetically engineered 100,000 strains. Their goal: to isolate strains that create lots of oil very quickly.   ...   In September 2007, Sapphire found a winner - algae whose oil is molecularly similar to light, sweet crude. In other words, any refinery can take the algae oil, which looks a lot like molasses, and turn it into gasoline, jet fuel or diesel.   ...   "I can't wait 20 years to build a new infrastructure for liquid fuel," says Pyle. "We want to use the pipelines, refineries and gas stations we have now and get our fuel into cars, trucks and airplanes."   CNN

  • Bloomberg "George W. Bush, who's lately warmed to the notion that nations must cut greenhouse gases, has stopped short of endorsing mandatory caps. That hasn't prevented the world's biggest banks from plotting ways to eventually rake in winnings off emission limits in the U.S.  The banks are rushing to hire traders for the U.S., betting it will enact caps, combined with emissions permit trading, after Bush leaves office in January 2009. In the European Union, emissions trading tripled in value to $24 billion in 2006 from a year earlier, when the market started, World Bank figures show. ``The growth is phenomenal,'' says Seb Walhain, who runs the world's biggest emissions trading desk at Fortis, Belgium's No. 1 bank.  The U.S., which produces more greenhouse gases than any other country, promises to be an even bigger market, says Stephen Welham, a trader at Ambrian Capital Plc in London.  ``The EU emissions trading scheme is going to look like a sideshow to the U.S. and other embryonic programs in a few years' time,'' Welham says."

    • well within the bounds of natural variability, in which Earth’s climate has warmed and cooled cyclically throughout its history;
    • largely natural in origin;
    • unlikely to be catastrophic to humanity or the rest of the biosphere;
    • not susceptible of significant reduction by any actions we take;
    • far from the most serious threat to humanity and the rest of our environment. Further, we believe:
    • the costs of achieving even tiny mitigation of future temperatures through any policy of greenhouse gas emissions reductions would far outweigh the benefits, and
    • the benefits of adaptation to whatever temperatures the future brings–warmer or cooler (and geologic history assures us that they will be both)–can outweigh the costs." and printscreen and pdf  (for the record)

  • Solar cell, anatomy: photovoltaic cell, PV, create electricity from photons. Specmat "A photon causes the photoelectric effect.  The photon's energy transfers to the valance electron of an atom in the n-type Si layer. That energy allows the valance electron to escape its orbit leaving behind a hole. In the n-type silicon layer, the free electrons are called majority carriers whereas the holes are called minority carriers. As the term "carrier" implies, both are able to move throughout the silicon layer, and so are said to be mobile. Inversely, in the p-type Si layer, electrons are termed minority carriers and holes are termed majority carriers, and of course are also mobile.   The pn-junction.  The region in the solar cell where the n-type and p-type Si layers meet is called the pn-junction.   As you may have already guessed, the p-type Si layer contains more positive charges, called holes, and the n-type Si layer contains more negative charges, or electrons. When p-type and n-type materials are placed in contact with each other, current will flow readily in one direction (forward biased) but not in the other (reverse biased).  An interesting interaction occurs at the pn-junction of a darkened photovoltaic cell. Extra valance electrons in the n-type layer move into the p-type layer filling the holes in the p-type layer forming what is called a depletion zone. The depletion zone does not contain any mobile positive or negative charges.  Moreover, this zone keeps other charges from the p and n-type layers from moving across it.  So, to recap, a region depleted of carriers is left around the junction, and a small electrical imbalance exists inside the solar cell. This electrical imbalance amounts to about 0.6 to 0.7 volts. So due to the pn-junction, a built in electric field is always present across the solar cell.  P = V × I   ...When photons hit the solar cell, freed electrons (-) attempt to unite with holes on the p-type layer. The pn-junction, a one-way road, only allows the electrons to move in one direction. If we provide an external conductive path, electrons will flow through this path to their original (p-type) side to unite with holes.  The electron flow provides the current ( I ), and the cell's electric field causes a voltage ( V ). With both current and voltage, we have power ( P ), which is just the product of the two. Therefore, when an external load (such as an electric bulb) is connected between the front and back contacts, electricity flows in the cell, working for us along the way.
  • Focus on the Family, environment: notes: "Scripture repudiates any view that exalts creation above the Creator or trivializes human suffering.  Though we oppose greed, covetousness and environmental "gluttony", "basic human welfare--at home and abroad--must be preeminent in all environmental proposals." ... file
