Space Solar Power Incremental Demonstrations and Research Project (SSPIDR) AFRL Air Force Research Lab .... (on Maui) WHAT IS IT? SSPIDR is a series of integrated demonstrations and technology maturation efforts at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate to develop space-based solar power collection and transmission capabilities. Space solar power beaming is not a new concept; yet until recently, the technology did not have a clear path forward. In collaboration with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and primary industry partner, Northrop Grumman, AFRL established the SSPIDR project to rapidly infuse space technological innovations in collecting solar energy to provide uninterrupted, assured, and logistically agile power to expeditionary forces. HOW DOES IT WORK? The space solar power system that SSPIDR is developing will use a novel “sandwich tile”. The tile collects solar energy in space via photovoltaic cells, converts the solar energy into Radio Frequency (RF) and beams it to a receiving antenna on the ground. The receiving antenna, or rectenna, will then rectify the RF beam into useable power. However, building an operational space power beaming system presents many challenges, and it is these challenges that SSPIDR is working to address. METHODOLOGY The SSPIDR team examined the needs of an operational system and identified six critical technologies needing further research and development to make this system a reality. Scientists and engineers will explore these areas culminating in critical technology demonstrations that validate both the technology concepts and models for incorporation into an integrated system design. THE INCREMENTAL DEMONSTRATIONS SPIRRAL The Space Power InfraRed Regulation and Analysis of Lifetime (SPIRRAL) experiment will explore solutions to the thermal challenges experienced by a space solar power beaming system. One promising solution is Variable Emissivity Material (VEM), which reduces extreme temperature swings. SPIRRAL will be flying several samples of VEMs onboard the International Space Station and is slated to launch in MID-2023. ARACHNE The keystone flight experiment in the SSPIDR project, Arachne, will demonstrate the sandwich tile and its ability to collect solar energy, convert it to RF, and beam it to a rectifying antenna on the ground from low earth orbit. A panel of nine sandwich tiles, under development by Northrop Grumman, will be flying on Arachne, which is expected to launch in 2025. SPINDLE The Space Power INcremental DepLoyable Experiment (SPINDLE) will explore the deployable structures technology element. A space-based solar power transmission system will require large orbiting structures, which calls for a solution for how to stow, deploy, or possibly even build these structures in space. SPINDLE is currently undergoing ground demonstrations, which will determine the path forward. THE RESEARCH The critical technologies driving the realization of a large scale system are Deployable Structures, Energy Generation, Thermal Management, Distributed Control, RF Beaming, and Metrology (beam forming). Additionally, SSPIDR pursues parallel technology paths – advancing multiple experimental possibilities to find the most innovative technological solution for further maturation efforts. These research advancements will feed into the development of the large-scale system. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT? AFRL’s main mission is to develop and mature technologies to benefit the warfighter. Ensuring that a forward operating base receives power is one of the most dangerous parts of a ground operation. Convoys and supply lines, which are major targets for adversaries, are the usual methods to supply power. To use the solar power beaming system, a service member would simply set up a rectifying antenna to gain access to power, eliminating costly and dangerous convoys. Essentially, AFRL is enabling the relocation of those supply lines to space, which could save countless lives. There is a high possibility that this technology could be a highly valued asset in the commercial sector as well. [+]GETTY IMAGES The idea of space-based laser weapons orbiting the earth has been a part of popular culture and real life government projects for decades, from James Bond’s Goldeneye to Ronald Reagan’s ambitious “Star Wars” program. Recently, the Pentagon began developing a framework to promote the innovation of what it calls Direct Energy Weapons (DEW) designed to weaponize laser systems for use against military targets. The U.S. military more than doubled its spending on DEWs between 2017 and 2019, from $535 million to $1.1 billion. Yet, compared with the massive funding for kinetic missile defense and nuclear modernization, these are minuscule budgets. Other nations, such as China and Russia, are also investing in these DEW systems. There are even reports that China might have used microwaves against Indian troops in 2020. What does NOT exist, however, is PG&E or Solaren deploying lasers in space that are capable of beaming "lasers or blue beams of light," to start wildfires in California benefiting the Rothschilds, as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green claimed in the infamous Facebook post. Space, however, is the final frontier of solar energy. NASA recently tweeted that it has teamed with five companies – including Northrup GrummanNOC +0.9% and Lockheed MartinLMT +0.6% – to design “vertically deployable solar arrays” for use on the Moon. The solar arrays would be able to autonomously deploy up to 32 feet high and retract for relocation. The technology is meant to serve as the foundation for future extraterrestrial solar arrays that could be used to power anything from lunar habitats, to rovers, to future robotic or crewed missions. Space based solar power (SBSP) has been drawing increased attention in recent years not only for its applications in space, but for its potential to provide virtually limitless clean energy to Earth. With the help of lasers, energy from the sun harvested in space could one day be redirected back to Earth to meet terrestrial power demand. This process is called power beaming. Satellites equipped with solar panels collect high intensity solar radiation using giant mirrors to reflect solar rays onto smaller solar collectors. The collected energy is then beamed back to Earth as a microwave or laser beam — the two leading methods of power beaming technology. Microwave beaming systems could provide upwards of 1 GW of energy to terrestrial receivers, which is enough to power a large city. Laser systems produce 1-10MW per satellite, and would theoretically be deployed in constellations of hundreds. The technology has enormous implications for the battle against climate change, with global companies and great powers now vying to develop their own SBSP systems. The US, the EU, Japan, China and Russia are conducting research on SBSP and power beaming. However, skeptics of SBSP point out cost, maintenance and environmental challenges. Microwave transmitting solar satellites would need to go about 35,000km into space from Earth to optimize functionality, making them virtually impossible to repair in a timely or regular manner. Also, a single solar power station may have to cover as much as 5 square miles – equivalent to 1,400 football fields. While laser-emitting solar satellites only need to venture about 400 km into space, their relatively small generation capacity would mean hundreds, or even thousands, would need to be launched in order to make a substantial impact. It is estimated that a single satellite launch can range in cost from a low of about $50 million to a high of about $400 million. In August of last year The Pentagon paid SpaceX $316 million to launch a satellite. With terrestrial solar energy being touted as the “cheapest electricity in history,” it begs the question: why go through the trouble to produce energy in space? Even though the potential for solar power on Earth is great, it’s even better in space. About 30% of solar energy is reflected back into space by the atmosphere, and every night we are left completely in the dark. In an average winter month in Europe, only 3% of sunlight reaches Earth. Seasonal variations also affect the efficiency of solar power generation. Conversely, in space there are no clouds, seasons, atmosphere or nighttime. Estimates hold that SBSP could generate 40 times as much energy as Earth-based solar power. SBSP also bypasses the problem of energy storage by providing a continuous stream of radiation from the sun that could be beamed down on demand. The ability to deliver power at will to any location on the face of the Earth would be especially beneficial for power users in remote locations, such as isolated towns, large mining and manufacturing operations, or electric transportation systems. Remote military bases and outposts are another example of a potential SBSP consumer. Nowhere is the cost of electricity higher than in forward-deployed military bases. Cost estimates for fuel during Operation Iraqi Freedom at times reached hundreds of dollars per gallon. This doesn’t include the high human costs of lives lost protecting those supply lines. While interest in SBSP is growing, technological maturation is likely decades away. However, the pace of development depends on investment and favorable government policies. He has been researching the Maui fires and has compiled evidence that the technology exists to have started these fires from a satellite in earth orbit. He has also confirmed that the CCP had satellites capable of doing so above Maui at the time of the fires. His work has been published on his website stevefavis.com and includes everything you need to recreate his findings. The most efficient way to ignite a fire on the surface from a satellite in earth orbit would be to paint the target in segments by pulsing the laser with an advanced targeting system. To see if this were possible, Favis calculated what it would require to create a meter-wide mile-long fire. Fired from a satellite, the Earth's atmosphere will absorb and scatter some of the laser energy. And so the laser would need to be in a wavelength range that minimizes this. The most effective wavelength would be in the near-infrared range which would allow better transmission through the atmosphere. The near-infrared range would be invisible to the naked eye, and would also have a minimal reaction with objects colored blue on the Earth’s surface. The power of the laser would need to be in the hundreds of kilowatts range. And so Favis based his calculations on a 10-megawatt laser firing from earth orbit. Assuming that the atmospheric loss amounts to 50% of the overall power and only 5 megawatts reaches the surface as a one square meter beam, it would ignite a fire almost instantly. If this 5-megawatt beam was pulsed across a one-meter by one-mile-long area in segments, then the time to ignite the entire area would be roughly 2.7 minutes. And it would take approximately 8.8 seconds to melt an aluminum alloy wheel. The amount of energy required to pulse a 10-megawatt laser for 2.7 minutes would require approximately 3,220 capacitors, which would amount to about 32,200 kilograms in weight. Using Matlab software and plugging in public data provided from NORAD, he found that satellites launched and monitored by the CCP were directly above the Maui fires at the time of ignition. The CCP’s most powerful rocket, the March 5, can launch up to 48,500 kilograms of payload. Which is enough to carry the required payload. But Favis has found that the CCP has much more powerful lasers deployed already. He has calculated that the CCP has up to 70 GIGAwatt lasers in earth orbit right now. That’s at least a hundred times more powerful than what he factored into these calculations. August 23, 2023 by Michael Just when you think that this story can’t get any worse, somehow it does. It is being reported that the wildfires that we just witnessed in Maui were the deadliest wildfires in the entire history of the United States, and according to Moody’s Analytics they caused somewhere between four and six billion dollars in economic damage. But if authorities had responded more competently, the outcome could have been much different. In fact, the fire that ultimately completely destroyed Lahaina could have been controlled if fire crews had not “left the scene even though the fire was still burning”… Maui locals have questioned why the blaze which developed into deadly wildfires that swept across the island was left unattended by firefighters hours before it spread. A fire broke out on the outskirts of Lahaina at around 6.30am on Tuesday, August 8 and was declared ‘100 percent contained’ several hours later. Fire crews then left the scene even though the fire was still burning within the containment area. But within a few hours, there was a ‘flareup’ which quickly spiraled out of control and fire crews who responded again were unable to extinguish it. Once the fire came roaring back to life, hundreds of lives could have been saved if authorities had not put up a barricade that blocked the only paved road out of Lahaina… As flames tore through a West Maui neighborhood, car after car of fleeing residents headed for the only paved road out of town in a desperate race for safety. And car after car was turned back toward the rapidly spreading wildfire by a barricade blocking access to Highway 30. Have you seen photos of the lines of vehicles that were destroyed by fire right in the middle of the road? Large numbers of people were trying to get out of Lahaina, and the only paved road out of the community became a death trap because so many vehicles got crammed behind the barricade. But those that decided to disregard the barricade and drive around it ended up saving themselves… One family swerved around the barricade and was safe in a nearby town 48 minutes later, another drove their 4-wheel-drive car down a dirt road to escape. One man took a dirt road uphill, climbing above the fire and watching as Lahaina burned. He later picked his way through the flames, smoke and rubble to pull survivors to safety. But dozens of others found themselves caught in a hellscape, their cars jammed together on a narrow road, surrounded by flames on three sides and the rocky ocean waves on the fourth. Some died in their cars, while others tried to run for safety. We are being told that the barricade had been put up to prevent people from driving over any power lines that may have been knocked over. But when all of those people were desperately trying to get out, why wasn’t the barricade taken down? Hopefully we can get an answer to that question. We are also being told that “safety” was the reason why the warning sirens were never used, and Hawaii Governor Josh Green is still attempting to defend that decision… In speaking to Face the Nation, Green reiterated this, saying that the sirens, which also were not fully functional, are used for tsunamis. “Do I wish those sirens went off? Of course I do,” he said. “And I think that the answer that the emergency administrator for Maui, who’s resigned, was, of course utterly unsatisfactory to the world. But it is the case that that we’ve historically not used those kinds of warnings for fires.” A water official also delayed releasing more water to help firefighters battle the blaze, waiting five hours to approve a request to divert more water. He felt it necessary to consult with a local farmer on the impact of water diversion prior to releasing it. M. Kaleo Manuel resigned from his position as the deputy director of the Hawaii Commission on Water Resource Management, and was transferred to a different position in government. The politicians are going to try to cover their rear ends, but nothing is going to bring back all of the people that have been killed. So many children were at home all alone because the schools were closed, and many of them never even knew that the fires were coming until it was too late… “The kids just don’t have a filter. So their son ran up and was just telling our son, you know, ‘This kid is dead. This kid is dead.’ And it’s like, all my son’s friends that they come to our house every day,” he said. “And their parents were at work, and they were home alone. And nobody had a warning. Nobody, nobody, nobody knew.” The true death toll may never be known. Authorities are doing their best to identify victims, but in some cases entire corpses may have been “cremated by the intense heat”… Many of those killed in Maui’s wildfires may never be properly identified because the devastating heat has made it so difficult to obtain DNA from remains, officials have warned. The grim task has also been made harder because so few relatives of the missing have provided DNA samples to compare with the victims, leading authorities to plead for more people to come forward. Officials said that they have been unable to obtain a usable DNA sample from 25 percent of the remains found so far. Fire experts say it’s possible some bodies were cremated by the intense heat, potentially leaving no bones left to identify through sampling. Joe Biden finally took a break from his vacationing to visit Hawaii. When a top official makes a trip like this, it is supposed to be a comfort to the people. But instead, local residents were horrified when Biden decided to make a joke about how hot the ground was… President Biden jokes about how hot the ground is in Maui after a fire ripped through, killing hundreds. “You guys catch the boots out here? That’s a hot ground, man,” he joked. Despite media reports of roughly 100 deaths from the fires, locals estimate that at least 480 people were killed. “I know there are at least 480 dead here in Maui and I don’t understand why they’re [the authorities] not saying that,” said one local. Reports had come in that the police were supporting FEMA workers blockage, both by land and by sea, of food, water and needed supplies from reaching Lahaina; refusing to hand out food and water to desperate survivors; closing down desperately needed food stations and refusing to account for the over 2,400 missing children. Meanwhile FEMA officials were staying at $1,000-a-night luxury hotels in Maui amid the recovery efforts in Lahaina. No further description of the men could be provided and this matter remains under investigation. At 11:21 p.m., the Yellowknife RCMP received a call reporting that four females were attempting to light a fire in a small green space on Burwash Drive. RCMP officers immediately attended the area and located the four youth females. RCMP arrested all four and found aerosol cans and lighters in their possession and near the scene. All four of the female youths have been charged with arson.” Spanish authorities also blamed wildfires on the tourist island of Teneriffe on arson, as AP News reported: “Canary Islands regional President Fernando Clavijo said Sunday that police have confirmed that a wildfire raging on the Spanish tourist island of Tenerife was started deliberately. Maui Preparatory Academy recently received a surge of about 1,000 applications for new openings the school made to accommodate displaced students, officials posted online this week. “We shuffled, rearranged the entire campus to welcome 110 new students (a 40% enrollment increase from last year). It is only a drop in the bucket. So many students not in classrooms today,” the school posted Monday on Instagram. Sacred Hearts School has posted on its website that its campus faced a “devastating fire that has left our campus in ruins.” A Hawaii Association of Independent Schools report shows the school enrolled about 200 students. Government officials have not been forthcoming on the number of children killed in the fire. Two weeks out they still only report 115 official deaths and anywhere from 850 to 1,100 people of all ages missing. Officials have not released a list of those presumed missing. School children in Lahaina were kept home that day due to high winds from an offshore hurricane, with many home alone because their parents were at work. The Associated Press reported Wednesday on a father who was able to rescue his children from the fire but is anguished because he wasn’t able to save his neighbors’ children (excerpt): Many of the survivors are angry, and haunted by the thought that a just few minutes of notice could have saved many lives. Active Denial Technology (ADT) produces a focused beam of directed energy (DE) to provide the Joint Force with an option to stop, deter and turn back suspicious individuals with minimal risk of injury. ADT is an intermediate force capability designed to bridge the gap between presence and lethal force without causing unnecessary destruction or loss of life. How does it work? Traveling at the speed of light, an invisible DE beam of radio frequency millimeter waves engages the subject, penetrating skin to a depth of only about 1/64th of an inch—the equivalent of three sheets of printer paper. This repel effect produces an intolerable heating sensation, compelling the targeted individual to instinctively move. It ceases immediately after the individual moves out of the beam or when the operator turns off the ADT system. Legacy Configuration From 2002 to 2007, the Active Denial System Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration integrated and packaged Active Denial Technology into two system configurations. System 1, the technology prototype, integrated the technology into a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle. System 2 was built as an armored, containerized system transportable by tactical vehicles. Both systems successfully completed a series of land and maritime-based military utility assessments. In 2014-2015 System1 was refurbished into a more robust and mobile system transported by a Marine Corps MTVR truck. Both prototypes are long range, large spot sizes systems and are available for Service or Combatant Command exercises and are suitable for operational employment. Human Effects Demonstration and testing of the large-scale version of ADT included more than 12,000 exposures on volunteers in static environments and realistic operational assessments. Laboratory research and full-scale test results demonstrated that there is less than a one-tenth of one percent chance of injury from system exposure. Research on the safety and effectiveness of 95 gigahertz millimeter wave directed energy has been peer-reviewed in numerous professional journals and independently reviewed by a Human Effects Advisory Panel. The achievement is a step forward in scientists’ desire to harness the fusion that occurs at the heart of the Sun, and then reproduce it on Earth in a controlled manner. Should they succeed, fusion power will provide the world with a safe, sustainable, environmentally responsible, and abundant source of energy. Fusion is a cleaner process as it creates no radioactive waste, and proceeds with light and abundant materials like hydrogen, which can be obtained from seawater, rather than expensive and rare elements, such as uranium or plutonium. Theoretically, one liter of water could provide enough raw material for fusion to produce as much energy as the combustion of 300 liters of oil. Nuclear fusions devices like KSTAR, known as tokamaks, replicate plasma, a state of matter created under the massive gravitational pressure and intense heat of stars like the Sun. In this super-hot stellar plasma, hydrogen atoms smash together at high velocities creating helium atoms. In the process, these fusions create vast amounts of energy radiated by stars. To copy this, tokamaks—often referred to as “artificial suns”—must heat heavy helium (deuterium) with lasers to temperatures as high as millions of degrees Fahrenheit, confining it within powerful magnetic fields. To generate fusion energythese artificial suns have contained the plasma at these temperatures long enough for atomic nuclei to begin smashing together. In 2016, KSTAR set a world record for maintaining plasma heated by containing plasma heated to 90 million °F for 70 seconds. This record was broken in 2017 by China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) when it sustained 90 million °F plasma for 102 and seconds. While this temperature is hotter than those in the Sun when fusion processes occur (about 60 million °F), because researchers here on Earth can’t replicate the intense pressure generated by gravity at the heart of a star while on Earth, temperatures in an artificial sun must be much greater to compensate. That means heating plasma to at least 180 million °F in a tokamak for atomic nuclei to smash together rapidly enough to kick start nuclear fusion. KSTAR was the first device to break this limit, generating these temperatures in plasma for just 1.5 seconds in 2018. While KSTAR’s new record can’t beat EAST’s record in terms of time, what the researchers on the project have managed to do is heat plasma to this important temperature of 180 million °F. The KSTAR team was also able to constrain this plasma for a record 30 seconds. The Korea Institute of Fusion Energy will now seek to improve KSTAR to increase the time that it can maintain plasma at a temperature of 180 million °F. It merges atomic nuclei to create massive amounts of energy – the opposite of the fission process used in atomic weapons and nuclear power plants, which splits them into fragments. Unlike fission, fusion carries less risk of accidents or the theft of atomic material. But achieving fusion is both extremely difficult and prohibitively expensive, with the total cost of ITER estimated at $22.5billion (£15.9billion). This is because causing hydrogen isotope atoms to collide and fuse together to produce helium – the same way as the Sun creates energy – produces an enormous amount of waste heat. However, last month UK scientists announced that they had found a way of dealing with these exhaust gases, cooling them from 270million°F (150million°C) to just a few hundred degrees, temperatures similar to that of a car engine. If a spacecraft were to be wrapped up in that kind of shielding, it would get to within 1.3 million miles of the sun. The integrity of the shielding would be compromised well before that, so, theoretically, you could make it to that distance before become fried to death. There are a couple of other things to consider — namely that cosmic radiation would probably kill you before you reach a complete half the distance to the sun. Modern shielding against space radiation is still quite poor, and before trying to make sure astronauts won’t melt on their way to the sun, we need to make sure their bodies aren’t irradiated hellholes. Reversing the order of events in retelling the story created a “tale” where tourists car engine stopped first and then were approached by a German soldier who told them that they had to wait. The soldier returned a short time later to say that the engine would now work and the tourists drove off. Such stories were circulating in Britain around 1938 and during the war British Intelligence relaunched the myth as a “British engine-stopping ray,” trying to spoof the Germans into researching what the British had supposedly invented in an attempt to tie up German scientific resources.[53] German World War II experimental weapons During the early 1940s Axis engineers developed a sonic cannon that could cause fatal vibrations in its target body. Rifle, bazooka and mortar rounds easily deformed the parabolic reflectors, rendering the wave amplification ineffective.[54] In the later phases of World War II, Nazi Germany increasingly put its hopes on research into technologically revolutionary secret weapons, the Wunderwaffe. Among the directed-energy weapons the Nazis investigated were X-ray beam weapons developed under Heinz Schmellenmeier, Richard Gans and Fritz Houtermans. They built an electron accelerator called Rheotron (invented by Max Steenbeck at Siemens-Schuckert in the 1930s, these were later called Betatrons by the Americans) to generate hard X-ray synchrotron beams for the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM). It stated that it did have, however, an ‘ultra-loud public address system which […] could be “used for verbal communication over two miles, or put out a sustained or modulated sound blanket to make conversation, and thus crowd organisation, impossible.”‘[58][59] East German “decomposition” methods The writer Jürgen Fuchs described decomposition methods as ‘an attack on the human soul’.[60] He died of a rare form of leukemia in 1990 which he believed was the result ofradiation poisoning. He, and others, suspected he had been targeted with directed X-rays during his imprisonment.[61][62] In East Germany in the 1960s, many people were arrested and interrogated for holding politically incorrect views or for performing actions deemed hostile by the ruling socialist state. Such arrests, which could also involve direct physical torture, were condemned internationally. In an effort to avoid such condemnation the state security service, the Stasi, attempted alternative methods of repression which could paralyze people without keeping them in a physical prison. In addition, when the East German state collapsed powerful X-ray equipment was found in prisons without there being any apparent reason to justify its presence. In 1999, the modern German state was investigating the possibility that this X-ray equipment was being used as weaponry and that it was a deliberate policy of the Stasi to attempt to give prisoners radiation poisoning, and thereby cancer, through the use of directed X-rays.[61] The negative effects of the radiation poisoning and cancer would extend past the period of incarceration. In this manner someone could be debilitated even though they were no longer imprisoned. The historian Mary Fulbrook states, ‘The subsequent serious illnesses and premature deaths of dissidents such as the novelist Jürgen Fuchs, and the author of the critical analysis of ‘The Alternative in Eastern Europe’, Rudolf Bahro, have been linked by some to the suspicion of exposure to extraordinarily high and sustained levels of X-rays while waiting for interrogations, and being strapped to unpleasant chairs in small prison cells in front of mysterious closed boxes- boxes that, along with their mysterious apparatus, curiously disappeared after the collapse of the SED (Socialist Unity Party of Germany) system.’[65] Strategic Defense Initiative In the 1980s, U.S. President Ronald Reagan proposed the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) program, which was nicknamed Star Wars. It suggested that lasers, perhaps space-based X-ray lasers, could destroy ICBMs in flight. Panel discussions on the role of high-power lasers in SDI took place at various laser conferences, during the 1980s, with the participation of noted physicists including Edward Teller.[66][67] Though the strategic missile defense concept has continued to the present under the Missile Defense Agency, most of the directed-energy weapon concepts were shelved.
